John Tillman has been hired as the University of Maryland's head men's lacrosse coach, Director of Athletics Deborah A. Yow announced today, becoming the ninth coach in the 85-year history of the program. Tillman comes to College Park after three years returning Harvard lacrosse to national prominence and twelve seasons as the top assistant at Navy, during which the Midshipmen experienced some of the best years in their storied history. He has signed a seven-year contract.

-Caitlyn McFadden of NCAA champion Maryland has won the Honda Sports Award as the nation's top college women's lacrosse player. McFadden becomes automatically eligible to win Collegiate Female Athlete of the Year. The senior midfielder from Phoenix, Md., was voted the outstanding player of the NCAA tournament. Maryland trailed 6-0 against the five-time defending NCAA Division I lacrosse champions Northwestern, but chipped away. By the final horn, the Terrapins were champions for 2010 with a 13-11 decision.

After Syracuse pulled within three goals of top-seeded Maryland midway through the second half of Friday's NCAA Division I women's lacrosse semifinal, the Terrapins' offense exploded for six consecutive goals in a span of 4 minutes and 15 seconds and coasted to the national championship game for the 15th time.

The Maryland women's lacrosse team never made any secret of its goals for the 2010 season. The Terrapins were upset by North Carolina in the national semifinals last year after winning their first 21 games. Maryland had beaten the Tar Heels earlier, which added to the sting of that loss and fueled its fire to finish the job from last year.
